Gas Safety Week

Did you know there are nearly eight million older people that could be at risk from unsafe gas appliances within the UK?

A huge three quarters of Brits have never discussed gas safety with an older family member. This is why we here at Boiler 24-7, are urging you to raise awareness and make sure older friends and family know the possible gas related dangers in their homes. With more than 260 over 65’s injured every year in a result of gas appliances, it is important we do our bit to cut these numbers down.

By carrying out simple steps like these, we can help reduce the 57% injury rate for over 65’s, down to a bare minimum:

  1. Sign up for an annual system cover

With the number as low as 16% for the amount of people who do speak to their older relatives about gas safety, it is important to raise awareness. Maybe you’re busy or forget to? No problem, we have you covered. We can make it easier for your family and friends and take a load of your chest as well. Click here for more information.

  1. Recognise the CO

One in nine over 75s have little or no knowledge of the dangers of carbon monoxide (CO) and only less than half of Brits (47%) can recognise carbon monoxide poisoning symptoms in their older relatives. There’s no colour, taste or smell when it comes to CO, but there are symptoms that can indicate a problem: headaches, nausea, dizziness, breathlessness or even loss of consciousness. Remember, all of these can be mistaken for something else, so make sure you find out exactly what it is.

  1. Know the signs

Just over half of Britain (53%) know the signs of an unsafe gas appliance. Seeing a lazy yellow flame instead of a crisp blue one is one sign of an unsafe gas appliance; as well as this, stains or soot on or around the appliance is another sign of unsafe gas appliances. So make sure you keep these appliances in check.

One in 6 gas appliances are known to be unsafe; which in our eyes, is one too many. We want to make sure every single customer of ours is 100% safe in their own home.

It is unfortunate, as older people are half as likely (6%) as other age groups (15%) to have a gas installation or service carried out by a professional. By not doing so, they are instantly putting themselves in danger.

We do not want you or our older friends and family in danger. Do yourselves and your older relatives a favour, and get all gas appliances checked by a professional. We are a Gas Safe Registers business who are always ready to help.
